No maybes; for Verbrugge, now is definitely the time. JAZZTIMES

In a very casual-sounding way, Canadian vocalist Angela Verbrugge offers truths of the heart, urgent and genuine. A gentle authenticity without pretense that lends a light-hearted tenderness and a speaking naturalness. With the stellar accompianment of NY and Canadian players such as pianists Ray Gallon & Miles Black, bassists Cameron Brown and Jodi Proznick, and drummers Anthony Pinciotti and Joel Fountain, Angela's take on Bernstein's "Somewhere" is sweetly sustaining, "Born to Be Blue" is a playful piano/voice duet, and "If the Moon Turns Green" is a masterpiece of delicate ardor. Throughout the set, Verbrugge and her band create singular landscapes of feeling that run parallel with these intriguing melodies and lyrics.

I was struck, once again, by her wooing mixture of girlish playfulness over deeply serious emotions… romance that first saunters, then gallops. Rarely do I listen to CDs all the way through in one sitting, but Somewhere is a charming exception.”

JAZZ LIVES

Angela Verbrugge keeps a busy schedule as a singer, touring in Canada and farther afield. In addition to performing, she writes songs—jazz songs, new standards—with lyrics that are engagingly personal and funny, containing the occasional acerbic twist. As a lyricist, she often speaks to the quotidian. Her texts are a perfect match for pianist Ray Gallon's boppish compositions. There is a bit of Blossom Dearie in her persona and a dollop of Dave Frishberg.”

Syncopated Times

Throughout this selection of songs infused with romanticism, Verbrugge has a lovely voice which exudes sincerity: neither showy nor stagey, it offers a very appealing natural authenticity in the setting of these pieces. leaves us keen to hear more of her own compositions in future. ”

Angela sings the way people used to sing in New York clubs in the 1950s. She interprets the standards with charm and feeling, transferring the beauty of these melodies to the present day.” —” - Marek Romanski (Polish jazz reviewer and radio host)
